How to Grow Your Own Food in Small Spaces - The Urban Ecolife

By Dr. Mercola

You probably know already that organic foods are good for you. The major problem most people have with organic food is the expense. However, there are several different ways to radically reduce the cost of your food.

Growing your own is probably one of the best, and can be extremely satisfying. I am convinced that growing sprouts is more practical and useful for most people and takes less space and time but it will be a bit longer before I am able to provide a comprehensive article on how to do that.

[ UPDATE : Click here to see pictures of the Permaculture BioFilter Duck Pond – One Year Later ]

I’m sure when my friends decided to undertake this biofilter duckpond project, they had no idea what was to come

Many observed from the sidelines and would remark how they were totally, whole-heartedly and utterly, in over their heads.

Is a Permaculture Design Certificate right for you? My Experience at OAEC - The Urban Ecolife

The final hugs goodbye were like tearing family away from me when I left on this undefined trip at the start of the year. It had only been 2 weeks, but when you’re living in close quarters to 23 others students who all share a very similar and admirable outlook on life, it doesn’t take long for the heart strings to connect.

The 2 week, 72 hour, Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) is a globally recognised course constructed by the one and only Bill Mollison, ‘Godfather to Permaculture’, back in the 70s. Here’s a quick run down on Permaculture if you’re unfamiliar with the term. Whether you want to complete the course in Australia, Thailand, Costa Rica, Africa, Canada, Spain or like myself, in California, there’s a course out there for everyone that would make sense for you depending on your needs. For me, it made sense with timing, location and the fact I would be spending the next who-knows-how-long travelling through the Americas. This decision was priceless.

6 Alternatives for City Composting when you can't compost at home - The Urban Ecolife

In the past, I’ve offered up some pretty cool ways to compost if you’re an urban dweller and don’t have the backyard space to have a full-fledged system. There’s this DIY Balcony Worm Farm and this Bokashi Composting System. There are those of us, however, who might not have the space or resources to do either and because it’s my goal in life to make composting sexy and totally accessible to everyone, I don’t want to leave you guys hanging!

A city friendly composting unit... and you don't even need worms! Say goodbye to smelly compost! - The Urban Ecolife

If composting was pretty, everyone would be doing it.

If composting was easy, everyone would be doing it.

If composting didn’t smell like a bunch of rotting scraps, everyone would be doing it.

So what if composting could be all these things. Would people actually do it?

Healing through nature and what the heck is Biophilia

Mother Nature is a gift to mankind.

It’s a gift we are so blessed to have.

It’s one that has the potential to heal. A gift that is forgiving. One that can bring a sense of ‘zen’ to life. One that human creations pale in comparison to.

When we carelessly destroy, exploit and stomp the hell all over it with our burdensome carbon footprints, we are in essence, damaging the delicate tie between Mother Nature and Man.

Think of it this way.

“I don’t have a green-thumb.”

This has to be one of the oldest and lamest excuses for an excuse to not grow plants. Of all excuses to not grow something, that’s all you could come up with? I’ll take a bitzillion other excuses before I take that one.

Quick and dirty tips for Balcony gardening

It’s a challenge gardening in small spaces. When I moved into my apartment nearly 2 years ago, I conceded to the fact that I would never have my own garden. I have no soil, no space, no proper facilities. IMPOSSIBLE, I thought.
